How to use dictation on Android

Tap in any text box, then tap the microphone at the top of the Gboard keyboard. When you see Speak now, talk. On Pixel 6 and later, advanced voice typing adds punctuation and voice editing.

Voice typing with Gboard

  1. Make sure Gboard is your keyboard. It's the default on Pixel and many other phones, and free on Google Play.
  2. Open any app you can type in, such as Gmail or Keep, and tap a text area.
  3. Tap the microphone at the top of the keyboard.
  4. When you see Speak now, say what you want to type.

To replace a word, touch and hold it, tap the microphone, and say the new word.

Other keyboards, such as Samsung Keyboard, have their own microphone button that works similarly.

Pixel advanced voice typing

On Pixel 6 and later, Gboard has extra voice typing features. Turn them on in the keyboard under Settings → Voice typing → Advanced voice typing features.

  • Keep the mic on across several messages: double-tap the microphone.
  • Auto punctuation is a toggle in the same settings.
  • Voice editing: "delete last word", "clear", "clear all", "send", "next", "stop".
  • Pixel 8 and later, US English: detailed edits such as "change Tuesday to Wednesday" or "insert really before good", and "fix it" to proofread. These send text, but not audio, to Google.
  • Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Your Gboard language and phone language must match.

Speech stays on the phone, except for "fix it" and detailed edits.

Tablets

On tablets, Gboard shows a voice toolbar. Tap Menu (or the language label, such as EN) and choose Show voice commands to see what you can say.

Commands

Say "period", "comma", "new line" and more. See the full Android voice typing commands.
