Wispr Flow vs. free built-in dictation
For occasional messages and notes, the free dictation on your device is enough. Wispr Flow earns its price if you dictate for a large part of your day and want what you say turned into clean, punctuated text without filler words, in every app on every device.
Based on published features and prices, checked October 23, 2026. Not yet tested hands-on. How we compare

When the free option is enough
- You dictate short messages, emails and notes.
- You're happy to tidy the occasional "um" yourself.
- You mostly use one platform.
- You'd rather keep audio on your device (Apple's on-device dictation, Windows Voice Access).
When paying makes sense
- You dictate for an hour or more a day, so cleanup time adds up.
- You switch between a Mac or PC and your phone and want identical behaviour.
- You use lots of names and jargon that built-in dictation keeps getting wrong.
A middle option
If you want the extras without a subscription or the cloud, Superwhisper and Spokenly have free plans that run on your device. See the best free dictation software.
