The best dictation software for Mac

Apple Dictation is free and built in, and it's good enough for most Mac users. For dictation that cleans up as you talk, look at Wispr Flow or Monologue. For offline and private, look at Superwhisper, Spokenly or MacWhisper. Dragon hasn't been sold for Mac since 2018.

Is Apple Dictation enough?

Probably, if you dictate messages, emails and notes. Apple Dictation works in any app, adds punctuation automatically, and in many languages runs entirely on the Mac. It has no voice commands for editing. For those, turn on Voice Control, which is also free. People pay for an app when they want:

  • Rambling turned into clean text ("um", false starts and repeated words removed).
  • A dictionary that learns names and jargon.
  • One tool across Mac, Windows and phone.

What about Dragon for Mac?

Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in 2018, and no Mac version is sold today. See Dragon alternatives for apps that fill the gap.
